Call for Applications: PGC Visayas Internship Program 2023

The Philippine Genome Center Visayas is calling for interns to join our Genomics Track and Bioinformatics Track. Our internships offer an exciting and challenging opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment. Our interns will be exposed to cutting-edge technologies and gain valuable skills and experience in genomics and bioinformatics. The interns will be involved in projects related to genomic sequencing, data analysis, and data management. This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics.

Internship: Genomics Track

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Must be a an incoming Senior or Graduating BS student with a good academic record who are currently enrolled in a science-related program at a recognized college or university.

Must be an undergraduate student taking up courses such as BS Biology, BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

Minimum of 6 units in biology, molecular biology, or a related field.

Eager to learn new things quickly.

Positive working attitude and show enthusiasm and motivation to perform.

Have excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills in English.

SCHEDULE OF INTERNSHIP

June 1 to August 31 , 2023, 8 Weeks

Internship: Bioinformatics Track

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Must be an undergraduate student taking up courses such as BS Computer Science or with background in Biology.

Has experience in at least one programming language, preferably familiar with the Unix/Linux command line environment.

Minimum of 3 units in biology, molecular biology, or a related field.

Eager to learn new things quickly.

Positive working attitude and show enthusiasm and motivation to perform.

Have excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills in English.

The PGC Visayas Internship Program will be held at the Philippine Genome Center Visayas which is located at the University of the Philippines Visayas Miagao campus in Miagao, Iloilo.

You will receive an email stating that your application has been received.

The duration of the Internship program will depend on the requirements of the program that the intern is enrolled to. PGC will offer internships annually from July to August.

Yes, the current internship program is designed for undergraduate students only.

Must be an incoming Senior or Graduating BS student with a good academic record who is currently enrolled in a science-related program at a recognized college or university.

 

For Genomics Track: Must be an undergraduate student taking up courses such as BS Biology, BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. The applicant must have a minimum of 6 units in biology, molecular biology, or any related field.

 

For Bioinformatics Track: Must be an undergraduate college student taking up courses such as BS Computer Science or with a background in Biology. The applicant must have an experience in at least one programming language, preferably familiar with the Unix/Linux command line environment

Yes, the bioinformatics focal area emphasizes writing custom scripts to analyze next generation sequencing data. Entering the intensive internship in bioinformatics with some programming experience will help you keep up with the fast pace delivery of the material.

You will need to submit the following: Motivational Letter from potential trainee addressed to: Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols, Ph.D., Program Director – Philippine Genome Center Visayas; Letter of Recommendation from OJT Adviser; and Curriculum Vitae (in .pdf form).

To complete the application, the applicant must submit/request a Letter of Recommendation from the OJT Adviser. The Letter of Recommendation must be prepared by an OJT Adviser who is familiar with your scientific accomplishments, motivation, scientific interests, and skills. If the OJT adviser is not available, the curriculum adviser, program adviser, or department head may also write the recommendation letter. The Letter of Recommendation must be included in the email attachments that will be sent by the applicant.


We highly prioritize those applicants who are currently having Internship/OJT Practicum as their subject load and included in their curriculum, nonetheless, we will still accept their internship applications. The school or college department will still decide whether to credit the internship of their students who are taking an internship outside of their subject load.

We are currently following a work plan and the activities are already scheduled for the whole duration of the internship. For special cases, we do offer a flexible schedule/time slot as long as the intern meets the required number of hours within the allotted period for the internship (June to August 2023).

No. We look at the entire application and do not disqualify applicants based on a single feature.

All applications will be reviewed until March 30, 2023.

PGC Visayas is located at the University of the Philippines Visayas Miagao and is an hour away from Iloilo City. We recommend that the interns must secure a place to stay in Miagao for the whole duration of the internship.
